Do you have any favorite pieces of media that depict immortality? I love immortality as a narrative concept but I feel like I haven't seen a representation of it that really imparts the gravity of living for hundreds/thousands/millions of years

I don鈥檛 feel like I鈥檝e consumed anything that directly focuses on this topic. But in another post I talked about how The Sandman has my favorite representations of immortality and Death. Though obviously that is not the main focus of that story

Imagine being immortal in this situation.

I do think the concept of immortality being a curse is interesting, but most media does a crap job of convincing me.

Immortality just needs an off button. Because if you were immortal without one you would eventually experience the end of the universe as we know it and you'd just be floating in the dark of space by yourself. And that's probably gonna extend on to eternity.

I remember seeing a post abt immortality where it was basically like "everyone you knew dies, and its still the very, very beginning of your life. The planet becomes fire and ash, you're floating in the vacuum of space, and it's still the very, very, beginning of your life."

yeah but the thing with immortality is that there is literally no end to your friends dying. i can鈥檛 imagine wanting to make any sort of connection with anyone knowing for absolutely certain i was going to outlive them, and their children, etc.

immortality only sucks when u get stuck at the bottom of a lake and then are stuck in a constant state of drowning and recovery so that you are constantly recovering consciousness and then drowning into unconsciousness again 馃様

Immortality sucks because when the world ends and it鈥檚 been 5000000000000 years of floating in darkness and having nothing to do 馃樄 immortality isn鈥檛 the same as living longer than a life expectancy. Small brains zzz

Immortality sucks because on a long enough timeline you鈥檙e eventually going to get stuck in a hole

Lmao, Immortality Sucks, because you'll live through the death of the Universe itself. Suffocating as your blood boils for all of Nothing does NOT sound like a fun time.

The series Sandman, had a similar take to this on immortality. The sandman bet a cocky human that after a century of immortality he will want to give it up, and he never did as he enjoyed his life too much

Immortality sucks because getting stuck in Nutty Putty Cave facedown (or a similarly harrowing experience) is not a freak accident, but a statistical inevitability. No amount of skill can save you

My thing with immortality is that, unless it's coupled with great power and influence, it's bound to lead to long lasting suffering. I am of the opinion that the reason life is so valuable, is because it comes to an end. We have limited time to do shit, which makes it worth it.

I can only think about Iconoclasts when it comes to immortality and it's drawbacks

Immortality sucks because thanks to grammatical drift, your favourite puns will someday make no sense.

The whole 'immortals struggling to make social bonds beyond the handful they'll remember forever' in particular is so weird to me for its prevalence.

immortality without eternal youth sucks ass though. respectfully i don't want to spend eternity as a bedridden pile of bones and skin

Eventually you lose connection to everything that had any meaning to you, family, friends, even the very concept of humanity becomes as insignificant as a sandcastle you made as a child that crumbled in the waves, you cried that day, but today it's no big deal.

If I had to wish for immortality, I'd pick a subscription-based model. Give me a hundred years, then ask me if I want to extend for another hundred years and repeat

Me when I'm never going to wander from land to land and era to era, drifting around the world and helping the occasional person with their problems as I bear witness to the steady march of human progress:

Immortality sucks because just as you finally become an expert in life hacks and skill ranges for the society you're in, someone comes up with a radical shift where you have to toss out the old knowledge and learn all new things and it continues forever as lovers fall to dust.

immortality is cool cause you just find one specific family you think is fun to fuck with and just show up once a generation to fuck with the newest one

Also none of those are problems with immortality. They are problems with being immortal surrpunded by mortals.

The only negative thing about true immortality is the heat death of the universe eventually you'd be the last thing in a void of nothingness just floating forever

I would never be willingly immortal: Will I die when the planet dies? Or will I be floating in a magma ball somehow still alive? Will I outlive the entire universe? And see the great undoing of all matter? Will i have to endure humans forever? No thank you馃槶

Not me. The mere thought of doing life until 60s is making me pray I die halfway through.
