I have nothing but love for 1X. NEO has already made history. and it’s only day 2. this company will continue to change the world and I’m excited to see it happen. as for me, I am getting back to my research project while preparing a PhD application or two.. and maybe I will finally write that substack post. I also plan to help humanoid startups in Japan gain footing in Silicon Valley, and vice-versa. but mostly I’ll always be a friend of NEO.. and I can’t wait for you all to be, too 🤍

the teleoperators at 1X are good people. they each have big hopes and dreams. they are my friends, and they are taking on the difficult yet essential task of data collection in order to make these concepts a reality. I hope the early adopters, and everyone, can recognize that these humans behind (inside) the robot deserve to be valued and treated well. they are shaping a future of robotics that doesn’t yet exist, and no one can do it without them.

for the past 5ish months I spent 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with NEO the robot. I joined as a ‘robot operator’ or teleoperator/data annotator. I am an anthropologist, so this kind of role is inherently interesting to me. I put my own research project on hold so I could understand the reality behind what I am writing about. luckily, being next to a humanoid robot every day taught me more than any theoretical papers on social robotics ever could. there are many brilliant people with good intentions who have come together for a greater purpose in the 1X offices. I believe in this purpose with all of my heart. I didn’t become interested in robotics because of science fiction - I did because I believe this technology will one day help people, particularly women in East Asia, currently overburdened by household labor. 1X is in an optimal position to be the first company that can realistically address these challenges.
