if trash isn’t getting picked up because you’re on strike, the best way to stop “scabs” is to just do your job. if you say the contracts aren’t fair, that’s your right, but don’t expect society to go to bat for your negotiations. people want the trash to be picked up.

true, but the flip side of this is that unions have no obligation to not use their platforms and nascent popularity to push the public not to undermine their labor actions

yeah, that is entirely correct and I think it is fine for people to vigorously disagree about this stuff. I would not expect the union to say anything different, nor should they. I just disagree.

You're a great example of why the average Bay Area resident would not survive in Philadelphia

If you’re scabbing you are, in fact, participating in a strike, on management’s side.

Scabbing isn’t about obligation, but the choice of whether or not to stand with other workers as they attempt to improve their lives through collective action and bargaining You don’t have an obligation to engage in charity either, but it’s still understood as a good thing

i mean i think the point of the term "scab" is to consciously create and enforce a norm that the public does have an obligation to participate in strikes

No one said it was obligatory, they just said it was shitty to do this (which it is)

scabbing makes it harder for all people to be compensated fairly for their labor 🫠🫠🫠 it sets a terribly precedent. solidarity is important. don’t undermine the collective

If you want to help your neighbors out during a crisis, know there is a word (well, two) for what you are. A good neighbor.

Yes! We do! Our fates as the working class are intertwined! Workers of the world, unite!

TBH it's also self defeating. Dollars to donuts if ppl did the alternative and just dumped the garbage on the street, you'd have to be delusional to think that the political result would be more union support.

Yeah we should just let them pick off one industry at a time and hope it won't come for ours

The big disconnect with public unions is that the taxpayers are footing the bill. People love to make the government out to be this independent entity. It's our taxes that have to go up to support these things. And we should have a discussion over whether it's worth it or whether to cut other wasteful spending to fund it. But it's wild when public unions strike, hurt taxpayers, essentially demanding taxpayers pay them more, and are shocked that taxpayers aren't thrilled to support them?

A scab is a non-union WORKER who crosses the picket line It’s someone in the same industry. It’s not the public who just want the job done and will do it for their neighbors Not having your trash picked up is a health hazard. Sorry not sorry

Not crossing picket lines is not a legal obligation but a moral one, you can decide what type of person you are and act accordingly.

By this measure, it’s equally true that the public has no “obligation” to refrain from calling people like this scabs and shaming them

If you don't want to be called a scab don't do scab behavior. Simple.

I mean they don’t have obligation but it still might be scabbing lol. Isn’t the whole point that they aren’t doing anything illegal but it’s opportunistically taking advantage of the under-compensation of workers?
