The proper civic religion for the U.S. is "maximize liberty". This positive frame supports a tremendous variety of political arguments on both the left and right. Whereas defining the good in terms of "not-Nazi" leads to people only being able to proclaim virtue by expanding the scope of what is considered "Nazism" and justifying all sorts of bad proposals by doing the opposite.
