"Zug-Based Auction App Expands Successfully into Neighboring Country
The app “AuctionShack,” founded in Zug, is shaking up the secondhand market: after a successful launch in Switzerland, the platform has entered the Top 70 of the App Store charts in Germany.
By Andreas Faessler
Julius Ilg from Zug, formerly employed at Ricardo, has developed his own auction app “AuctionShack” (short: Shack), which has been online since the end of 2024. The goal is to enable people to sell used items quickly and with minimal effort. [ Buyers & Sellers pay no fees ]. The app uses AI to automatically identify and describe items, provides price recommendations, and accepts common payment methods as well as cryptocurrencies. In this way, Ilg aims to promote sustainable commerce and make [“Shack”] internationally known.
This is why Ilg has taken the next step - and already the next one after that: the app has launched in Germany and, according to Ilg, immediately entered the Top 70 of the App Store shopping charts. After more than 50,000 Swiss users, Ilg is now pushing ahead with international expansion. In November, “AuctionShack” is set to launch in Austria.
The app founder is overwhelmed by the development of his platform in Switzerland, even though the initial conditions were not easy. Julius Ilg: “The app was initially available only in German and English, even though Switzerland speaks four languages.” In addition, it was launched only in the Swiss iOS Store. Many potential users are not even registered there. Added to this were high marketing costs [ compared to other countries ] and the fact that “Shack” operates without employees or offices.
Better Conditions than in Switzerland
In Germany, Ilg sees great potential for “AuctionShack.” Since the transformation of eBay into a sales platform increasingly resembling Amazon, the market has lacked a true online auction provider like Ricardo in Switzerland. “Shack” aims to fill exactly this gap. Moreover, the conditions in Germany are simpler than in Switzerland, Ilg notes.
The founder from Zug also plans to release the Android version at the end of the first quarter of 2026 and launch in the U.S. market by mid-2026. In parallel, he is targeting a larger financing round. Technologically, “Shack” is set to be further developed: in the future, users will be able to pay directly in the app with stablecoins - a digital payment method that operates on blockchain - especially useful for cross-border transactions. Ilg is also working on digital [ tokenization ] & authentication of collectibles to eliminate physical shipping needs and enable trading directly on the platform.
