I was watching Netflix’s new series Death by Lightning. It’s set in Chicago, 1880 - and this establishing scene pops up. In the foreground: •an Asian woman, •two Black men, •and a one-legged man - all walking together downtown. It immediately stuck out to me, so I looked up the actual demographics for Chicago in 1880. Here’s what the numbers say: •Chicago’s population: about 503,000 •Black population: 6,500 (≈1.3%) •Chinese population: 172 total (≈0.03%) •Chinese women? About 3% of that - meaning roughly 5 total in the entire city. •Disabled/one-legged men from the Civil War era? Plausible, maybe 0.1–0.2% of the population. So if you ran the math on the odds of seeing all of that - an Asian woman, two Black men, and an amputee - in one random 50-person crowd downtown, it comes out to about 0.00016%, or roughly 1 in 640,000. In other words, Netflix made a scene that’s about as statistically likely as spotting a UFO on your morning commute - but hey, at least the diversity box got checked.

Dr Amal Bose was head of the department and was found guilty of molesting younger female members of staff. Marek Grabienowski, staff nurse, was found guilty of stealing prescription drugs. Dr Xowi Mwimbi was jailed for punching a patient in the face for no valid reason. Hernando Puno, a healthcare worker, was convicted of FIVE counts of sexual assault. A victim reported him assaulting her in 2014 but it was not taken seriously and it took another 9 years before he was tried. Dr Aloaye Foy-Yamah was banned for 12 months after the GMC found he raped a female colleague. He will be practicing again from March 2026. Meanwhile the r*p* and murder of Valerie Kneale goes unsolved. She was in the stroke unit following a minor stroke, when she was so brutally assaulted that she died of her internal bleeding. Someone was arrested for this (and for another r*p*) but set free on bail and never prosecuted. We are constantly told that the NHS relies on migrants to function. This is not functioning. This is criminal. Patients deserve to be cared for when in hospital. Not brutally assaulted.

Six weeks ago, I wrote to Tim Davie, then Director General of the BBC, to ask why a Panorama film crew who came to Runcorn to make a documentary about migrants housed in HMOs ignored the testimony of several residents who had suffered crime and anti-social behaviour from those housed in them. A few years ago, I had a terrifying experience while staying alone in a hotel. At 6am, I was jolted awake by a man trying to get into my room - throwing his weight against the door again and again. I couldn’t reach reception, so I called the police. The call handler stayed on the line, coached me through what to say to get him to leave. Then called hotel reception staff to send help (they were useless) - and rang back later to check I was okay. But hotel staff seemed irritated by the police involvement. When I checked out, they told me it was “just a drunk man" who said he'd got the wrong room. At 6am in the morning. A drunk man who may well have intended to attack or r*pe a woman. Later, a male colleague said he felt I’d overreacted by calling the police. At times, I've wondered if he was right. Today, a friend has told me she’s been diagnosed with PTSD - after a similar incident in a hotel. Only her man stood outside her hotel room m*sturb*ting. He’d seen her earlier that night and knew she was alone. She tried to call reception - but the number on the keycard was wrong. The website too. Like me, she felt trapped in her room - so she called the police. They were brilliant - arrived quickly and arrested him. But the hotel staff barely apologised. The council housing the man in the hotel (despite his criminal record) didn’t seem to care either. Turns out there was no CCTV in the corridors either. And here’s the thing that stays with me: I was made to feel like I’d overreacted. But what I feared - the very thing women are so often told we’re imagining - happened to someone else. Because of course, it does.
