Protectionism is the source of some of our ills. Taxing some people to give other people free stuff the rest.

Not all, but an ideological rather than pragmatic approach to these questions is dangerous, and has certainly landed us in our current predicament. The logical end of completely open markets is completely open borders. And for that, the Whiggish Libertarians bear much of the blame.
