ok been on a mac studio for 2 months after 15 years of arch linux - here's some takeaways note i still remote into arch for all my work i used to use a 5K ultra wide - on linux you could split it into virtual displays i split it into one 4k display and the remainder was a secondary area, could window manage each independently this is impossible on macOS so the ultra wide was useless - eventually swapped to a 6K regular monitor i settled on aerospace for window management, it's the best i found but it's still rough, macos really does not want you using it this way so much of macos is not customizable i had trouble turning off all animations so a few things still feel slow on the plus side the whole iphone + airpod + mac combo is insane - it changed so many of my habits to the point where i can't imagine giving it up i also use my iphone as my desk camera now, another thing that works seamlessly on mac all media stuff got easier, video recording, editing, audio - even simplified my physical setup in a few places raycast is great - linux sorely missing something as polished. there's a lot of very polished mac apps without a linux equivalent overall...i'm frustrated. there's a lot of good but it's not a slam dunk and my system doesn't feel as optimal as it used to but i also don't wanna give up the positives to go back to linux i feel like the gap is close and apple could close them...but i have no faith they care about any of this stuff

A stupid hack on macOS that people do on ultrawides is two monitor outputs from the Mac to the monitor and use the monitors ability to show two video streams simultaneously

i actually tried this but it only could do 50/50 split

“I still remote in to arch for all my work” … when you say “all” I assume the coding parts? ssh in, tmux, nvim, etc? Or you mean something more?

yeah but what else is there besides that!

right about now feels like a good time for them to dedicate one macos cycle on the stuff that developers and other pros want, to keep them spending $4000 on a macbook every 3 years instead of bringing over more ipad features that nobody cares about

raycast has window placement embedded, just in case

We just need to make @kdeconnect better and linux would be on par with MacOS

Omarchy?

I use raycast to assign each app to an F key. Instant switching between my top 12 most used.

Pretty good assessment, my take is that the direction for Apple is down and arch is up, so taking the bet for tomorrow.

Instead of closing the gaps, Apple has been widening them. I switched from Ubuntu to MacOS in 2014. The last 3 years I’ve been contemplating a switch back to Linux, and every major product or OS release pushes me slightly more in that direction…

as a longtime part-time linux/macos user, i absolutely understand and feel you i just want i3wm, native, on macos… and no: aerospace and yabai are not the same, no matter how hard those poor devs try: because apple!

Just in case, a couple things: - if you hide the dock bar, here’s how to instantly show/hide it without the animation: `defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-delay -float 0; killall Dock` - if you want, you can add empty spaces in between icons in your dock bar: `defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'; killall Dock` Which 6K screen did you get?

the seamless integration with other apple devices is amazing. Stupid stuff like the shared clipboard between your mac and your phone work so well! but linux has another level of freedom

I've tried aerospace and it's buggy. Then I found github.com/wojciech-kulik/Fl… which works great, it doesn't do window management but doesn't virtual workspaces without animations. For window management you can use builtin one or Magnet (there are many more apps).

Cannot stand the forced workspace switching animation Yabai and skhd fixed this for me But feels wrong to disable SIP just for this

Windows management in Apple is an abomination and it won’t ever improve, sadly. Even dumb stuff like having to press once to give an application focus and then having to click again to interact with the window even though you can see the button right there.

What are you actually using Raycast for? I’m a user but only really use it as a spotlight replacement with no benefits

This gels with some of the simple things that Linus from LTT pointed out - for example, you can’t have different scroll/gesture settings for different devices SCREAMS either lack of polish or lack of understanding how people use Macs outside of Apple HQ.

I went to 2 machines, a Mac Studio and a Framework Desktop. When I frustrated I switch. Can’t get rid of the Mac because it has all my music and iPhone related syncing, but I’ve been using a straight Linux box more and more. I just use a giant 4k TV as a monitor and it doesn’t bother me. The side panels are just on Linux box now.

The Mac Studio, Pro Display XDR, iPhone, iPad combination works very well. I can’t see changing for a while. But then I started on a DEC VT52, so there have been some improvements over time.

There should be opensource efforts to match the mac experience, sadly, I don't think this is possible unless linux grabs a huge chunk of market share. People just don't have the incentive to do this. Maybe with omarchy getting clout we'll get there someday.

Have you tried rectangle pro? For window management? Customizes quite well for what you described.

Try BetterDisplay for display management, it's probably the best option. You can do a lot with it, but one thing I miss is fractional scaling. macOS doesn't support that and BetterDisplay can't magically add it.

Switching is certainly taking time. There are a bunch of nice tools to get going like better display for screen adjustments like you mention, yabai for tiling window management, little snitch for a sexy firewall, etc.

This is where I’m at as well. For just getting shit done, Mac has a paved road for everything. Sure, it may be significantly opinionated on how it’s done, but usually the solution works well, isn’t convenient, and has a lot of support you can draw on if a problem does arise. The day to day on a Mac is unbearable especially if your peripherals are all Apple products. Have you tried Asahi Linux?

Did you try the raycast window management system? I found that to be the best and fastest by far

Kalo Gold Corp. (TSXV: $KALO.V) has just made one of Fiji’s most significant gold discoveries in years. From the heart of the Pacific, Kalo’s latest drill hole VA25-DH11 returned 22.12 metres grading 12.80 g/t Au, including 10.05 metres at 25.10 g/t and 1.00 metre at 83.30 g/t at the Qiriyaga Complex within the Vatu Aurum Project. President & CEO Terry L. Tucker, P.Geo., called the result “a significant step forward” validating Kalo’s diatreme-margin targeting model and confirming a high-temperature epithermal system. With sixteen additional targets identified across the Aurum Epithermal Field, this breakthrough could mark the start of a district-scale discovery in one of the Pacific’s most underexplored gold frontiers.
