BREAKING: Canadian Senate Bill S-206 for a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income passed Second Reading and will be sent to Committee News Release: Senate Committee to Study Guaranteed Livable Basic Income — Senator Kim Pate 🤩

Nov 7, 2025 · 5:24 PM UTC

This has pretty much been set to rest. No basic income study has found a meaningful drop in work, beyond students and new parents (that's good). In fact, it boosts employment and education by giving people freedom to think long-term and invest in their careers.

@grok break down what this bill means
This is not UBI. Don’t be fooled. “Guaranteed livable basic income-cash transfers sufficient to live on and available to those in need” UBI is to provide regular payments to all individuals in a society, regardless of their income level, employment status, or financial need.

Don’t we already have welfare?

The credit rating agencies will just love this 😱. Way too early too implement this…but in 5-10 years once AI eliminates so many jobs, it may be needed. But how will it be paid for?

@grok is this a good thing for working Canadians?
Does this mean I get to pay for dead beat newcomers who after five years are still not contributing?

Why would any Canadian in their right mind want to pay taxes to give money to people who don't work, including refugees, to sit at home? Are Canadians really that stupid?

Well, if UBI comes to be, then, I won't be working 55-70 hours a week and have government take about 28-30% of my gross pay of every paycheck! Do you think rest or at least most of my colleagues will continue working those hours every week?
Get ready for everything to cost a lot more
There should be no guarantee of taxpayer money to those who do not contribute to society. There should be no government contributions to charities; this should be left to the people only. There should be limits to social programs, since if the government creates more people in need (through higher taxes), then there is no limit to how much it can tax us to make more people poor. This is an unsustainable cycle. The number of people in need should be a report card on how the government is doing, and not the GDP or other metrics,

Bathtub wit VR goggles, then? 👇‼️
I hope this goes through. Then I can raise the rent on all my properties the equivalent monthly amount. Because that is all this will do. You think real estate and rent is expensive now? Wait until this passes.

Thank you for addressing poverty. Trust that innovation will become 10x more efficient and help maintain balance in this transition. The fact that we, the poor, will have something to work with will change everything. Most will become a helping hand in a society that takes care of them—it will be returned!
If and or when they ever do this. They have to put a cap on rent payments. The sleezy landlords will all up the rents you can count on that. And ake sure even if they decide to (their excuse) renovate. Still no rent increases. And stop companies from making rental units into condo units (biggest scam ever)
If we get UBI, I'll move. I don't think we will. There is no way parliament will pass it.
Actually, it says it's a "Bill TO STUDY" universal income...how many billions will [they] waste on this study? 🙄

I imagine it will still be the people who go to work that will pay?
Cool, I’ll need $10’000/month. Cheers.
How much would that pay out ?
When is the third and final vote in Committee?
This is the worst idea ever!!!! It doesn’t motivate anyone to better themselves; instead, it encourages UBI recipients to settle for less, believing that government handouts are the best they can achieve, and to remain stuck in mediocrity.

Call it what it is. Communism.

Please summarize the cons to universal basic income, @grok.
