So, guided by their instinct, they use propolis (a resinous mixture they create from tree sap and wax) to encase the carcass completely. This process is called “mummification by propolis.”
Propolis is indeed antibacterial, antifungal, and resin-dense, forming an airtight seal that prevents decay and the spread of pathogens inside the hive. Scientists have documented this behavior repeatedly: explorers and beekeepers have found perfectly preserved “mouse mummies” sealed in golden resin within hives.
