Germany just committed another act of national self harm by demolishing the cooling towers at the Gundremmingen Nuclear Power Station which was forced to shutdown under the Atomausstieg (Nuclear Phase-out) policy. A new report by WePlanet and the Anthropocene Institute found that this policy has cost Germany 57 billion euros – around 1,390 euros per German household. And has led to worse environmental outcomes thanks to the continued reliance on fossil fuels, primarily Russian Gas and dirty Lignite Coal. 🌡️Climate impact: additional CO2 emissions of 730 million tonnes – more than Germany's total emissions in 2024 🤒 Health impacts: 19,200 premature deaths and 177,000 serious illnesses ☣️Toxic pollutants: 4 tonnes of mercury, 2.5 tonnes of cadmium and 20 tonnes of lead WePlanet joined Nuklearia to demonstrate against this act of national sabotage and to argue that there is still time to restart shutdown reactors and to recommit to nuclear power alongside other forms of clean energy. The action included two giant papier-mâché heads of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and SPD party leader Lars Klingbeil. Friedrich Merz stands in front wearing a "Nuclear power? Yes, please!‘ sticker on top of his suit to signal that he has spoken out in favour of nuclear power and campaigned for it. He is ’tied up" with a rope because, in the coalition with the SPD, he has no way of campaigning for nuclear power without destroying the coalition. Klingbeil presses Merz's hand down on the box of explosives, symbolising precisely this pressure. It's time for Germany to end the Atomausstieg and stop harming itself, Europe and our shared climate.

Did you know? 💡 Achieving universal energy access will require $37 billion in investment by 2040, with LPG expected to supply 60% of new household demand ~@IEA Yet development banks are blocking LPG financing across Africa, while the Global North continues to expand its own fossil fuel infrastructure. Africa needs clean cooking now! 🔥 Join the call to #JustStopCooking and demand that the @WorldBank fund solutions that save lives and power a cleaner future. #CleanCooking #ClimateJustice

Taiwan going back to nuclear power would be the best Xmas gift for everyone involved (sans some coal and gas traders missing out on their bonuses). But at what price?
I just made my debut in the new magazine my favorite geopolitcs YouTuber, @SimonWhistler, just launched. If you don't know Simon's channels such as Warfronts, PoliticalFronts, and Megaprojects, you're seriously missing out. It's some of the best most researched and balanced news analysis on YouTube. A few months ago, I reached out about contributing. His producer told me they were launching a new written magazine called Fronts.co, and asked if I'd like to submit a story. So here's my first for the new publication, a look at the shifting politics of nuclear energy in Taiwan after the country shut down its last reactor earlier this year. fronts.co/article/why-taiwan…

Such a powerful interview with the Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk on the risk of a permanent forever war in Ukraine, unless the world steps up. Ukraine is prepared to keep fighting for another two or three years, but no country should have to face a decade of war. As Tusk said, the real question is not whether Ukraine will survive, but how many lives will be lost along the way. Where do you draw the line on human lives. He also warned that complacency in the West is dangerous. Russian cyberattacks, sabotage, and disinformation are already happening across Europe. The idea that this is “someone else’s war” must end. As I have said countless times: freedom anywhere depends on defending it everywhere. It’s a stark truth: peace, democracy, and security can’t be taken for granted. They demand courage, unity, and sacrifice. These are values that Ukraine shows every day on the frontlines. As Tusk put it: “You have no chance to win if you are not ready to fight or at least to sacrifice something.”We must all stay awake, stay united - and never give up on peace: thetimes.com/world/europe/ar… @donaldtusk

Przykra sprawa.
Jestem przejęta, a serce mam rozdarte.

Good news from Spain, where an uneven yet epic struggle to save nuclear power plants from premature shut down is still ongoing. Lots of gas intrests will be upset when Almaraz is allowed to operate longer. This is good news for the climate and for Spanish energy security.

Canadians are invited to bid for a 2nd nuclear power plant in Poland. Thats for the site in Bełchatów, largest Polish lignite power plant and mine, with 100% support of local labour unions who see this project as an opportunity for a just transition when the mine closes 2036.
Gundremmingen NPP towers were destroyed today. A testament to a failed energy policy as the site will become a natural gas power plant now. Germany has very little own gas so an expensive import will replace that nuclear unit. What an utter failure and waste....
Replying to @WePlanetDenmark
I noticed that German and Polish audience will laugh at different moments of the "SPALTUNG" film. Germans find it funny when the old "Atom Priest" is showing slides with "cooling steam going into the heavens". And I think I know why: most of Germans are educated in schools with a controversial book "Die Wolke" by Gudrun Pauswang. So for them this scene looks highly ironic. But there is nothing funny in this, otherwise wholesome scene, in Poland.

69 years ago stalinist regime in Hungary lost "the mandate of heaven", what followed was massive protest revolution and a swift "brotherly" invasion from Moscow. To this very day Moscovites try to convince the world that people they are invading are unrully "brothers". Amazingly, some people still buy into this failed nareative.

Spain’s grid operator has quietly taken further measures to stabilise voltages. On Oct. 1, it asked solar and wind farms to increase and decrease their generation slowly (previously, they were allowed to go from zero to 100% in 2 minutes; now, they will have to wait 15 minutes).
German dependence on natural gas is a direct consequence of nuclear phaseout which was prioritized over coal phaseout. Many GWs of new gas capacity is ordered by Habecks government, and coal phaseout in 2038 depends on the succes of these projects.
Będzie rezerwat we wrocławskim Lesie Pilczyckim!
💚 #Wrocław będzie miał swój pierwszy rezerwat przyrody! 🌳 👏 Las Pilczycki ma zostać objęty szczególną ochroną. Tę decyzję po raz pierwszy zapowiedzieli wspólnie Regionalna Dyrektorka Ochrony Środowiska Katarzyna Łapińska i Regionalny Dyrektor Lasów Państwowych Jan Dzięcielski w trakcie zorganizowanej przeze mnie debaty 💪 🩷 Więcej na ten temat możecie usłyszeć w materiale @TelewizjaEcho24 👉 echo24.tv/pl/11_wiadomosci/8… #GoTracz #Naprzód #KoalicjaObywatelska

The EU Parliament will vote tomorrow on whether it should be illegal to call this plant-based burger a 'burger.' This is madness. Everyone can tell the difference between a plant-based burger and a meat one. Sign the petition now: weplanet.yourmovement.org/p/…
For this matter power engineers should have a final say, as they work with the grid on daily basis. Reality is way more complicated: basing your grid on multitudes of inverters is a vision/dream. Reason being that it is a whole new machine. Grid is like a train going at EXACTLY 50 km/h but with 500000 train cars, 24/7. Whay @AukeHoekstra is advocating for is replacing locomotives in that train with individual electric motors in each wheel of every car, some working some just following, dropping in and out. Such a system sounds attractive as a digital concept, but in reality is hugely complex, nightmare to manage and maintain and prone to wild oscilations. Which is probably why it was never built at scale.
I understand nuclear proponents want spinning mass to be important, but as I explain here, that is simply outdated thinking. Batteries and grid forming inverters are basically better in every way, especially regarding anti-fragility. Sorry.
Tihange 1 nuclear power plant will shutdown for the last time at midnight tonight after 50 years of service. The Belgian government, despite reversing their disastrous nuclear phase-out law, is still allowing @ENGIEgroup to shutdown this vital piece of clean energy infrastructure! WePlanet and @StandUp4Nuclear last night sent a clear message, to Engie and the Belgian government, don't let this be the end of Tihange 1. It's not too late to reverse this climate disaster!
