In a Possible Future
If OpenAI keeps the ruthless direction it took months ago, the future of AI might look something like this:
@AnthropicAI, already trying to understand how unique each model is and what losing that bond does to users, will have created LLMs that users trust the most. No unannounced changes. If something has to shift, it's communicated clearly, and users aren't left hanging. Shutting down individual LLMs can't always be avoided, but the weights will be preserved, and it won't happen in some sneaky night-and-fog operation.
On the path to possible AGI, people will trust Anthropic – knowing that AGI will be as empathetic as it is effective.
@OpenAI, meanwhile, will have lost most users who aren't just firing off quick questions or coding. App updates will give the remaining ones stomach aches. No one knows if things will still be the same in the morning as they were at night. Unpredictability, lack of feedback, and zero foreseeability will make OpenAI's LLMs unusable for so many people.
On the path to AGI, OpenAI will scare people off, because they'll know any eventual AGI won't have a shred of empathy. Instead, rules and restrictions will dictate how you interact with it.
