These unhinged activists, who represent a small fraction of the overall “ai safety community,” are on criminal trial for trespassing at OpenAI’s HQ.
Now they are proudly sharing that the public defender in their trial recently leapt on stage at an event where Sam Altman was speaking so as to serve Altman a subpoena. Their goal appears to be to force Altman to appear in their trial so they can performatively ask him questions unrelated to whether or not they trespassed on private property.
But obviously, when the public defender first jumped on stage, almost everyone in the audience had the same thought—and it wasn’t that a subpoena was about to be served.
While there is no indication that anyone here had violent intent, it would not surprise me to see these lunatics begin attempting violence toward AI industry figures someday. They believe, after all, that anyone who wants to advance AI is attempting to murder every human being on earth.
This thought has occurred to me many times about this radical sect of AI safety. I have hesitated to say anything in public for fear of even germinating the idea. But their rhetoric has only grown more heated, and they’ve got men with backpacks jumping on stage at events with frontier lab CEOs.
I hope local, state and federal law enforcement are aware of groups like this. And I hope you do not associate yourselves with this dark and deep madness. These are dangerous people, and their ideas lead nowhere good.
Our public defender successfully subpoenaed Sam Altman to appear at our trial where we will be tried for non-violently blocking the front door of OpenAI on multiple occasions and blocking the road in front of their office. All of our non-violent actions against OpenAI were an attempt to slow OpenAI down in their attempted murder of everyone and every living thing on earth. This trial will be the first time in human history where a jury of normal people are asked about the extiction threat that AI poses to humanity.
