I can install mysql on localhost with zero modifications to the config and it will be more reliable than RDS. Rotating backup? bash script

Yup, and in the end, they failover and upgrade relatively seamlessly, which is really all that really matters (given how many of us have struggled to make that work at scale for a very long time).

What are your thoughts on @PlanetScale ? Reckon AWS will start losing business to them?

RDS creation, unlike some other things, is infallible. It takes somewhere around 12 minutes to create normally, regardless of instance class. Also I see the guy using registry module. Imagine not writing your modules.
