i’ve done 6 total flights (including layovers) now with my baby at 4, 5, & 6 months so here is my advice for flying with an infant:
1. have an easy baby. this one is unfortunately out of your control.
2. babywear. don’t bring a stroller unless you absolutely need one at your destination. it’s just an extra heavy thing. way easier to just wear them around the airport and on the plane.
3. use baby privilege. see if you can cut the security line. ask the flight attendants if there is an empty row. preboard (most airlines let you). the worst they can say is no.
4. nurse/feed them on take off and landing to help with the ear popping. a binky works too. if they aren’t sucking, rub their jaw to make them move their mouth.
5. keep the nap schedule. even if you’re changing time zones. especially if you’re changing time zones. you will force the new nap/sleep schedule once you arrive.
6. if you can’t get them to sleep on the plane, walk to the back near the engines. there is more space to walk around and the sound will a) muffle the crying and b) provide nice white noise to help them sleep.
7. keep your bag stocked with diapers, extra clothes, and plastic bags for the inevitable disaster.
8. use the bathrooms in the middle they usually have bigger changing tables.
9. if your spouse is with you, take turns so you each have time to close your eyes/read a book/watch a movie/pee alone.
10. if the baby cries, don’t stress. it’s a baby. they cry. most people irl are nice. the internet people are the insane ones.
Any practical advice you can share for long flights with baby?
