Google has made an awesome proposal, subject to court approval, to open up Android in the US Epic v Google case and settle our disputes. It genuinely doubles down on Android's original vision as an open platform to streamline competing store installs globally, reduce service fees for developers on Google Play, and enable third-party in-app and web payments. This is a comprehensive solution, which stands in contrast to Apple’s model of blocking all competing stores and leaving payments as the only vector for competition. The public filings are live.
Exciting news! Together with Epic Games we have filed a proposed set of changes to Android and Google Play that focus on expanding developer choice and flexibility, lowering fees, and encouraging more competition all while keeping users safe. If approved, this would resolve our litigations. We look forward to discussing further with the Judge on Thursday.

An actual open platform wouldn't require stores at all. You would just be able to download an .apk and install it, even if it's not signed by companies Google has approved of. Are they planning to reverse that?

WHOA! If this is true, that means Google sees apps dying in a few years tbh. Still cool AF though.

@grok can you find and link the public filings?

Gatekeeping sideloading will come back to haunt all of us down the line. I suspect, including Epic.

As an Android user (Google Pixel Pro 9 Fold; remigrated from iOS in 2021), I'm excited. As someone making a productivity app (with a contract developer; not launched yet), I'm thrilled. As an IP & antitrust litigation watcher, I'm amazed.

weird that different companies have different business models. Maybe the free market will decide which it likes more

If that happens it will force Apple to lean towards the same path, i love it

Did $Aapl steal iOS or acquire someone to create App Store/OS? If Apple OS is not proprietary and if they are not allowed to own their OS, then why can’t I own all IP to Fortnite & tell gaming firms what to charge or not to charge? I don’t understand this? It took 15 years of working on iOS to get it to this level. And you want to come on their platform and determine what you would rev share, what and how iOS and @Apple should treat you vs. others? Why don’t you guys build own OS, own device and get your own user acquisition. This just seems so wrong at so many levels. Now translate this to Weight Loss drug by Lilly or Disney Park tickets. If these prices are too high, then can I just sue them to dictate prices? If I am a content creator on @YouTube, am I going to tell them what to keep and what to give? Even though I didn’t do anything to create the platform and billions of losses upfront to get it to this level. This Epic lawsuit is the most non democratic Un American thing I have seen in a long time.

Tim, that's a brilliant move by Google, no doubt! But will it truly level the playing field, I wonder?

Google's anti-competitive actions with the playstore are the tip of the iceberg for the overall antitrust violations by Android. Google has been heavily doubling down on anti-competitive behavior with recent proposal to ban apk installs.

What about Google trying to end sideloading if an app isn't signed and approved by Google, regardless of the developer?

Very sad that you have agreed to that, really. I thought you were fighting for all devs and not (what it looks like) Epics interests. Google just bought you like they were doing all the time with OEMs. Sad.

This is such a disapointment for game studios. It's worse than the original ruling. Tiered pricing for gameplay purchases, and ridicilous 20% "services fee" when using alternative billing is a bad compromise. This sacrifices game devs' choice better global terms for Epic store.
