Friedkin’s First Blood rules y’all. The Hunted is a film I rarely see discussed or praised, and I had forgotten just how stark, elemental, and razor-edge focused it is as a relentless chase thriller. Pointedly thematic, but always driven by momentum first and foremost

Like any media where a fighter uses their own gushing wound blood as an improvised weapon is on another level of hardcore
A simple ferocious $55 million cat-&-mouse from deadly wilderness to concrete jungle, with Jones and del Toro committing to rugged physicality and minimalistic performance. Inconceivable that a movie like this today would have the budget for its horrific, explosive opening scene

Friedkin has quite a few hidden gems under his belt. Watched Sorcerer for the first time last year, dude knows how to slather on the suspense.

Hunted, Bug, and Killer Joe are an incredible trio of films. Not many ‘70s/‘80s directors can boast a new millennium comeback that good

The reveal in the final scene that TLJ had received all of BDT's letters and chosen not to reply because he simply had no answers took it to another level.

Hunted and Rules Of Engagement are the two Friedkin movies I’ve seen the most. I had watched Hunted so much back in the day I had pretty much forgot exactly how good it was until I rewatched it a few weeks ago. Fucking stellar movie.

Also, TLJ’s low-key performance displaying subtle signs of OCD (check his hands whenever he talks to someone) is stellar. Film had trouble in the editing -transition from Act 2 to Act 3 feels quite wonky- but it’s a fantastic action yarn. Bonus points for Brian Tyler’s score too.

I saw this one in the theater & have always enjoyed. It felt like it could have been a Seagal film with him in the Tommy Lee Jones role. However, Jones is great in it.

So do we all agree that the two hunters in the beginning scene were out to kill him? That and the nasal spray assassins seem to justify his constant paranoia. The government, and not Toro, is the antagonist of the film.

For some reason. I always thought it was a sequel. To “The Fugitvie” as a kid.

Never mentioned in any Friedkin documentary. For a reason, I think.

That creepy scene where BDT forces the assassin to snort his own death spray is everything. Second only to the Michael Clayton assassination sequence.

They filmed the end fight & a few other bits in my hometown. My dad & his friend watched some of the fight being filmed.

I haven't seen it since it came out but I remember feeling at the time like it was chopped to bits in editing. Like there was more that we should have seen but didn't. Must give it a rewatch.
